Don’t Fall For That Trap

We live in world full of traps. The type of trap I’m talking about today, however, is the trap of comparison. This topic is one I struggle with frequently.

but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭10‬:‭12‬ ‭KJV‬‬

I think social media is an amazing tool. I think when used properly, it can be wonderful! I love seeing photos of my friends, and family. I love finding new recipes, or reading encouraging posts. At times though, I find myself comparing myself to others.

The “For You” and “Recommended” pages are what always seem to get me! The algorithm always knows what I’m into at the moment. Sometimes I’m suggested crunchy mom posts, sometimes fashion, sometimes homemaking, sometimes party planning, sometimes interior design. The problem with this is – I will never fit into a “recommended” page. I’ll never do well in ALL of those things at the same time. God didn’t create us to fit an algorithm.

If I’m not careful, I will take in the content, and become unsatisfied with my life. I’ll start to feel inferior, or that maybe I’m not doing as well as someone else is. Sometimes I begin to feel like I need to do or be something more. The pressure is intensified for me to be something I have no business being.

Sometimes I’ll see videos of wives, or moms seemingly having all of their ducks in a row, and I begin to feel down because I had a bad day. (Let me say though – that’s not the person posting’s fault. It’s my fault for feeling that way.)

All I have to do is be who I am. I can’t model myself after someone’s highlight reel. I don’t have to have a perfect home, be perfectly dressed, or have all natural, organic food to be who God created me to be.

I just want to encourage you today, to be you. Be who God made you to be. Don’t try to copy someone else, or think that because your life doesn’t look exactly like another’s that you’re not doing something right. Everyone has their own God-given life. No one’s dynamic or situations are the same. If you try to be like someone else, you’ll never measure up. Don’t try to measure up to others, try to measure up to Christ, and your mindset will certainly shift.
