Thy Word Have I Hid in Mine Heart

When I was a little girl, I was a memorizing machine. If there was a competition, or program to be in, I was in it to win it. I remember a specific year we had a competition the week of VBS, and if you said a certain amount of verses you’d win a Bible. I wanted that Bible so badly! I wanted to win. I worked all week long learning verses, and I did win a beautiful, white Bible! I was so proud, and excited! That’s just a little memory from my childhood, but – I’m so thankful for parents and teachers over the years who instilled a love of memorization in my heart.

Fast forward to today, and I’m so thankful I memorized scriptures when I was a child! Those verses come back to my mind so often in my daily life. God’s Word is the most precious thing we are given as Christians. Why wouldn’t we want to memorize it?

I have started trying to memorize more lately. My current verse is Philippians 4:8. I’ve been working on it together with my kids, and we’ve almost got it. It’s a favorite for sure.

I love teaching my children verses to memorize! If you aren’t teaching your kids scripture, I encourage you to do so! Currently, my children are in Awana at our church, and we love going over their verse of the week. Children are never too young to hear scripture. Last year, Ella Kate wanted to be with her brother in his Awana class and started half way through the year learning verses, and she completed the program at age 2!

It can be hard to know where to start. I love to write verses on post-it notes and put them in places I look often. With my children, I love listening to songs to learn verses, and making up hand motions! I also like to learn by breaking the verse up and saying it out loud over and over again. We typically go over them during homeschool, but we also recite scripture in the car, or at the table during meals. There’s never a bad time to quote the Word! Sometimes it may seem like it’s going over their head when you’re teaching them, but as they get older, they really start to get it. Every week now, Cooper (he’s 5) has questions about his verses and wants to know what they mean.

If we aren’t filling our children’s minds with God’s Word… then what are we filling them with?

“Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.” Mark 13:31 KJV

“so shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11 KJV

If you aren’t already, this is your sign to start memorizing scripture, and teaching your kids! It’s fun to learn along with them, and you will be so excited when they remember scripture that you have learned together!
